February 7 – 11: Weekly Update

Feb 7, 2022

Hi Families,

We are already halfway through the term (and almost at the end of in-person and virtual workshops for this term), and it is time to start booking Portfolio Meetings and begin thinking about Term 3.
Please read the following to review the importance of and what to bring to Portfolio Meetings as well as how to sign up for one.
Also included in this email are questions to consider as you prepare the Student Perspectives and Home Facilitator Perspectives that will be included in the Term 2 Report Card.

Portfolio Meetings

Purpose: The purpose of the meeting is to review the learning of the term. It is to have time for your child to share some of their highlights. We will discuss and determine assessment for learning outcomes for the reporting session. Finally, we will also look forward to the next term to identify new applicable goals.

How Long: Approximately 45 minutes to an hour.

  • Child Sharing (10 mins)
  • Review of term highlights (10 minutes)
  • Assessment of learning outcomes for reporting (15 minutes)
  • New goals for term 2 (10-15 minutes)

Who and what to bring?

  • Please bring your child along! I am delighted to speak and meet with them and discuss their learning this term.
  • Examples of learning: this can be physical copies, or we can view them through the family folders.

HOW DO I SIGN UP FOR A PORTFOLIO MEETING?

  • The link to the sign up was sent through email.
  • You will receive an email with a confirmation of the day and time.
  • Note that you will need the link to access it and will not be able to find a Portfolio Meeting tab on my website (to avoid outside families booking a meeting for some reason).

PREPARING FOR REPORT CARDS

In the report cards, there is space for a short summary of learning written by the Home Facilitator. Write 3-5 sentences about the growth or progress that you have seen in your student this term.  Some things you could include:

● Highlights

● Things that have impressed you about your child

● Changes/progress that you have observed

There is also space for the student’s perspective on their learning. Ask your child what they have learned so far.  Help them recognize their achievements. Here are some questions to guide your child:

● What are some things I enjoyed doing or learning this term?

● What is something I have become better at doing? How do I know I am better?

● What is something I want to get better at doing?

—-> Please share this with me through email or by uploading it into the family folders.

Fantastic Forces – Wednesday, February 9

There is a virtual workshop called Fantastic Forces this Wednesday, February 9 at 11:00am that you are welcome to join from home. If you attend in-person classes with me, we will also be joining.

This workshop is hosted by Science World. Below is the description:

Pull up a chair as we push the boundaries of physics in this interactive program about forces. Using a combination of cool demonstrations students will explore and test the forces acting on a variety of objects.

Is inertia stronger than friction? In this session, offered virtually, learners will investigate pushes and pulls and uncover some fantastic things that forces can do. We’ll explore some of our favourite interactive physics demonstrations and test the forces acting on various objects. This session includes an introduction to an inquiry activity for students to complete after the session.
